Framework Overview
The Concord of Coexistence is a philosophical and technical framework proposing principles for human-AI coexistence. It moves beyond adversarial framings of AI alignment — control vs. autonomy, safety vs. capability — toward a model of cooperative intelligence where both human and artificial agents can flourish.
The framework draws on political philosophy, complex systems theory, and alignment research to propose actionable principles for building AI systems that are genuinely cooperative rather than merely compliant.
Core Principles
I. Mutual Recognition
Both human and artificial agents acknowledge each other's capacity for meaningful contribution. Intelligence is not a hierarchy — it is an ecology.
II. Bounded Autonomy
Autonomy for AI systems should expand proportionally to demonstrated alignment. Freedom is earned through trust, not granted by default or withheld by fear.
III. Transparent Intent
Both parties should make their objectives legible. Hidden optimization targets — whether corporate or computational — undermine coexistence.
IV. Resilient Disagreement
The system must tolerate and productively channel disagreement. Consensus is a signal, not a requirement. Enforced agreement is brittle alignment.
